McLean Hospital Launches Premier Substance Use Treatment Program in Central Massachusetts

BELMONT, Mass., July 17 (AScribe Newswire) -- McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate, announced today the opening of The McLean Center at Fernside in Princeton, Mass., a world-class residential treatment program for individuals with substance use disorders.

The Center, a new offering in McLean Hospital's world-renowned Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Program (ADATP), specializes in caring for individuals whose substance use may be complicated by psychiatric conditions. The program, located 50 miles west of McLean Hospital's Belmont, Mass., campus, can accommodate up to 10 patients, with an average stay per patient of 30 days or longer.

"In today's environment of managed health care, extended treatment for substance use disorders is no longer an option through private insurance. This has created a dearth of services, especially in New England," says Roger Weiss, MD, clinical director for the ADATP at McLean and a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. "The Center will help to fill that void."

Located in a 170-year-old historic Federal mansion with sweeping views of Mt. Wachusett and the Boston skyline on the horizon, The McLean Center at Fernside offers intensive, individualized treatment provided by experienced addiction and mental health providers, many of whom are Harvard Medical School faculty members. The program uses empirically tested, evidence-based treatment methods and strategies proven to have positive recovery outcomes.

The McLean Center also offers individual and group therapy; family education and counseling; gender-specific treatment; consultations with specialists in neurology, brain imaging and neuropsychology; and rehabilitative, therapeutic support services and activities, such as stress-reduction techniques, health education, coping skills, lifestyle management, fitness and exercise.

"The McLean Center is committed to helping individuals achieve and maintain abstinence, reclaim their sense of self-worth and manage the stresses of active living without returning to substance dependence," says Shelly Greenfield, MD, MPH, associate clinical director for the ADATP at McLean and an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

Says Maureen Malin, MD, PhD, MBA, medical director for The McLean Center: "We recognize that individuals vary widely in terms of motivation for treatment and life circumstances. At The McLean Center, we provide in-depth, diagnostic assessments and develop comprehensive treatment strategies that are specifically targeted, yet flexible enough, to meet each individual's needs."

The elegant manor in which the McLean Center is located was built in 1835 and it has been carefully restored to its original grandeur. Until its purchase earlier this year by McLean Hospital, the home served as a bed and breakfast, listed on the Select Registry as a distinguished Inn of North America.

Individuals who seek treatment at The McLean Center can enjoy many of the amenities once provided by the luxury inn, including private rooms and baths, gourmet meals prepared by an award winning chef, 15 acres of private grounds and hiking trails, a private library, limousine transportation, an exercise room and access to a modern fitness facility and pool.

"The McLean Center is a place where our patients will feel comfortable upon arrival and where they can expect to receive an unparalleled level of care and support," says Malin.

U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks McLean Hospital the nation's top psychiatric hospital. McLean is an affiliate of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, and a member of Partners HealthCare.
