Association for Computing Machinery's Vice President Receives Technology Leadership Award; Wendy Hall Honored at Conference Celebrating Women in Technology

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 2 (AScribe Newswire) -- The Association for Computing Machinery's vice president Wendy Hall will receive the 2006 Anita Borg Award for Technology Leadership at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing. The award, to be presented on October 5 at the Hopper conference in San Diego, Calif., was established in 2004 in memory of the late Dr. Anita Borg. It honors outstanding leaders who embrace Borg's vision to change the world for women and technology.

Dr. Hall, a professor of Computer Science at the University of Southampton in the UK, is an acknowledged leader in intelligent information systems. Her research team developed the well-known Microcosm open hypermedia system, which was patented and spun off into a commercial company. Recently, she has joined with the inventor of the Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, and others of Southampton to develop a new research initiative in the emerging field of Web Science.

As ACM's new Vice President, Dr. Hall has emphasized the need for ACM to develop its international policies, programs and activities during her term. A supporter of initiatives to achieve greater diversity in the computing field, Dr. Hall currently chairs the newly formed Women's Forum of the British Computer Society. She is a former BCS president (2003 to 2004) and was recently appointed to the Scientific Council of the newly formed European Research Council.

Dr. Hall is an active member of ACM's Special Interest Group on Hypertext, Hypermedia, and Web (SIGWEB; http://www.sigweb.org/) as well as the ACM Special Interest Group on Multimedia (SIGMM; http://www.sigmm.org/). She was Chair of WWW2006 (http://www2006.org/), the World Wide Web conference, which is co-sponsored by ACM.
