ADVISORY for 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. PDT Saturday, June 21
LOS ANGELES, June 19 (AScribe Newswire) -- International celebrity, New York Times best-selling author and cancer survivor Fran Drescher is celebrating the first birthday of her charitable organizations, the Cancer Schmancer Movement and Foundation, on June 21, which also marks her eighth anniversary of wellness from uterine cancer. The anniversary celebration takes place Saturday, June 21 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.at SIMON LA restaurant at Hotel Sofitel Los Angeles.
As a cancer survivor who was misdiagnosed and mistreated for two years by eight doctors before being diagnosed with uterine cancer, Fran Drescher has made it her life's mission to shift the course of women's health history by launching Cancer Schmancer on June 21, 2007 to ensure that all women with cancer are diagnosed in Stage 1, when it is most curable.
Hollywood celebrities, cancer survivors and supporters will join Drescher in celebrating the Cancer Schmancer Movement and Foundation's bold achievements since their national launch one year ago. Such notable accomplishments include helping to pass the Gynecologic Cancer Education and Awareness Act (also known as Johanna's Law), the first of its kind in U.S. history, which the president signed into law and Congress funded. Cancer Schmancer Movement is now working with the Centers for Disease Control on how best to reach the most women of every ethnic and economic demographic. Cancer Schmancer Foundation has produced a DVD with real women sharing real stories. Hosted by Fran Drescher, this educational tool motivates, inspires and informs women how to take control of their bodies, in an entertaining format.
At the anniversary luncheon, Fran Drescher will speak on the need to empower women with knowledge, enable them to become better partners with their physicians, transform patients into medical consumers, and to galvanize them into one collective voice on Capitol Hill. Guests will enjoy dishes created by Iron Chef winner Kerry Simon, a live acoustic performance from Caitlin Crosby, as well as the opportunity to shop in a silent auction that features a "walk-on" to the set of the HBO hit series "Entourage," a Miley Cyrus autographed electric guitar, a pop portrait of Barbara Streisand, works by George Hurrell, and much more. Jeweler to the stars, Lori Wilkins Immerman, will also be on hand, and will donate a portion of proceeds to the Cancer Schmancer Foundation.
Drescher and other stars and cancer survivors will be available for media interviews. Red-carpet arrivals are from 10:45 - 11:45 a.m.
ABOUT CANCER SCHMANCER
Based on her second New York Times best seller, "Cancer Schmancer," Fran Drescher launched two charitable organizations, the Cancer Schmancer Foundation and the Cancer Schmancer Movement, both dedicated to ensuring that all women with cancer are diagnosed in Stage 1, when it is most curable. While many women's cancers cannot be prevented, the survival rates and quality of life for women with cancer can be significantly improved through proper patient education and coaching, early detection, and timely, appropriate treatment. The five-year survival rate after treatment for Stage 1 breast and gynecologic cancers is over 90 percent while the five-year survival rate for these same cancers in Stage 4 is less than 30 percent. The Cancer Schmancer Foundation educates women on the risk factors, early warning signs and tests that are available for early detection of women's cancers. The Cancer Schmancer Movement advocates for improved women's cancer healthcare legislation. For more information, visit http://www.CancerSchmancer.org .
