SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 24 (AScribe Newswire) -- The Center for Accessible Technology (http://www.cforat.org/main_page/cdip.htm ; CforAT) and California Emerging Technology Fund (http://cetfund.org/) named TechSoup Global one of three winners of the 2009 California Digital Inclusion Award. The award recognizes nonprofits, government agencies, and corporations responsible for raising awareness of and improving web accessibility for Californians with disabilities.
Not everyone who uses the Web can see or hear information on a webpage. In an effort to expand inclusivity on the Internet, winners of the California Digital Inclusion Award are recognized for improving accessibility for people with disabilities. Other award recipients include Intel and Bay Area Rapid Transit. San Francisco-based TechSoup Global is a nonprofit that provides computer knowledge and resources to other nonprofit and non-government organizations around the world.
According to TechSoup Global User Experience team member Colleen Nagle, "TechSoup Global serves thousands of nonprofits worldwide, which in turn employ and serve millions of people. We want to make sure everyone we serve can fully utilize our website as we continue to be a model of accessibility for the charitable sector." To achieve its accessibility goals, Nagle asked CforAT for help in critiquing TechSoup.org. She says, "CforAT assisted us with our site overhaul and upgrade project. We used Microsoft's SharePoint/MOSS software technology to make a large number of improvements in hopes of establishing a new standard for nonprofit web accessibility."
TechSoup Global content and web production teams also collaborated to make the TechSoup Talks! webinar series accessible. Nagle adds, "Last month we premiered our first closed captioned video."
