Health Literacy Center Ready to Bridge Gap in Understanding Health Care Reform

BERKELEY, Calif., May 3 (AScribe Newswire) -- A leader in the field of health literacy, UC Berkeley's Health Research for Action (HRA) announces that its services are now available to health care providers and government agencies facing the arduous task of explaining the health care reform law and its consequences to diverse populations. The complexities of the coming changes in the health care system could very likely lead to consumer confusion - and costly, unnecessary mistakes.

"Health insurance information is complex and a lot of it is written at the college level or above. We're here to help health plans and public agencies explain health insurance in ways that most Americans can understand," said Shelley Martin, HRA executive director. "When consumers thoroughly understand their rights and how insurance plans are changing, they can choose insurance and use benefits more wisely. The result is lower costs and better care."

With over 20 years of experience developing health literacy best practices, HRA offers a number of services in addition to explaining health care reform in plain language. The center develops member communication tools, trains health plans and public agencies in health literacy and conducts health literacy audits. HRA also develops easy-to-read materials in many languages and alternative formats.

Health Research for Action is a center in UC Berkeley's School of Public Health and has won numerous awards for its health insurance guides, including How to Use Your Health Plan: A Guide to Getting the Most from Your HMO or PPO, the HMO Guide for Seniors, and What Are My Medi-Cal Choices?
